Scouting
in 2007
Scouting
has developed into a worldwide organisation that provides adventurous
activities and personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people
aged 6-25 in the
UK
.
Internationally, 28 million young people enjoy the benefits of
Scouting across 218 countries.
Personal
development means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and
spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full
potential. In Scouting, we
believe that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,'
when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks
and think for themselves.
2007
is an important year for us, because 1st August marks 100 years of
scouting, 1907 being the year that Baden Powell took a group of 20 boys to
Brownsea
Island
, to try out
some ideas for his book "Scouting for Boys".
Although
"Scouting" was the result of the book, it wasn't Baden Powell's
intent. The book had been
intended to form a training aid for existing organisations, but issue of
the book (in serialised form) through 1908 created a storm of interest and
boys around the country forming themselves into 'Patrols'.
The rest as they say is history.
If
you would like to learn more about the organisation of the Scout Movement
and its history, I would commend the Scout Centenary Website to you, at http://www.scouts.org.uk/2007.
Look
out for events throughout the year as we support the Centenary
celebrations, and mark 1st August in your diary.
On this day, at
8.00 am
in the Market
Place in
Derby
we will mark
100 years from the beginning of that defining camp on Brownsea with
'Scouting Sunrise'.
Scouting
is as strong in Mickleover today as it has always been.
There are three groups in the village all with good support.
The 149th (Mickleover Methodist) Scout Group was founded, and
became a part of the church community, in 1960.
We have two Beaver Colonies for young people aged between 6 and 8,
two Cub Packs for young people between the ages of 8 and 10 and one Scout
Troop for young people between the ages of 10 and 14.
We
would be very pleased to hear from any young people who would like to join
our movement and take advantage of all we can offer, and we are always
very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to take up a supporting
role with the group, whether that be as a uniformed leader, a helper or
one of our army of behind the scenes supporters.
